About Andrea Mabee

Bio

Growing up in New York, Andrea Mabee was greatly influenced by her exposure to the arts at an early age. With a multitude of museums at her doorstep, the International Center for Photography quickly became one of her favorites. "The images I viewed, some haunting, some thought provoking, and others just exquisite in their aesthetic appeal, attracted me to this art form."

When Andrea moved to Maine almost 40 years ago, she built her first darkroom, and began to follow her passion to capture and create artistic images.

Living on the coast of Maine, Andrea has been drawn to the juxtaposition of both the serene beauty and the severe harshness of this striking environment. Working harbors and the men and women who earn their living from the sea are often the subjects of her photographs.

The diversity and culture that is found in an urban landscape continues to be the subject of many of Andrea's images.  Get-a-ways to Boston and New York are opportunities to visit with family and friends, and to capture images that portray another view of life.

Artist Statement:

The subject matter of my photography is not limited to one particular genre. I am equally intent on trying to capture the essence of a flower as the uniqueness of an individual. While some images appear to be very serene, others are bustling with motion and activity.

The candid photographs I take of people often show them in their natural environment, which helps to provide the viewer with a glimpse of the subject's story. Everyone has a story.

Each day brings an infinite number of photographic possibilities and the challenge of creating a fine image. In that vein, I can fully appreciate the statement made by the photographer, Imogen Cunningham, (1883-1976) who when asked, which one of her photographs was her favorite, she replied, "The one I am going to take tomorrow."

My work in photography is constantly evolving. Capturing images and then portraying them with an artistic vision is a truly gratifying experience. It is what feeds the soul!
